Comic Character: The Devourer

Description

This character creeps me the fuck out.

Anyway, the figure at the bottom is a character for the Asian comic. This character is female, and is a mix between an Indian wolf and a Tibetan mastiff. Examples of Indian wolves are seen at the top of the page, and the mastiffs are in the middle (I used photo refs for three of the sketches). Traditional Tibetan mastiffs are absolutely amazing and interesting dogs. The Tibetan dogs have no problem taking down a leopard or other large and dangerous wildlife. They are an old breed, and are fiercely loyal to their owners, and extremely defensive of their territory. The western strain has been bred to be more of a family pet, and act and look quite different from the Tibetan dogs in my opinion. I wish I could just have a straight out mastiff in the story, but really need a hybrid for the role.

At any rate, I have not settled on a final design by any means. I just needed to jot down *something* because I couldn't sleep until I at least put a sketch down on paper. I am having trouble hitting the right blend between mastiff and wolf, and have hundreds of throw away sketches, and will probably have thousands more before the design is more to my liking. This character is huge. Tibetan mastiffs can weigh over 170 pounds, and wolfdogs usually are bigger than either parent. On top of her natural weight, she is obese. How does a wild animal possibly become obese? Well, that's covered in the comic. :)

Oh! And first generation wolfdogs usually look much more wolfy than doggish, but hey, creative license man.

I'm in absolute awe of the neck, mane and head of this wonderously creepy character. A very original idea that totally caught my attention. Imagine if you could get one as a pet...
